Double Feature
Paprika (2006), Satoshi Kon. June 10, 7:10pm. View count: One.

Hot Fuzz (2007), Edgar Wright, June 10, 9:40pm. View count: One.

Goddamn yes. Last night we got to the theatre too early for the sporadic showings of Hot Fuzz, so we decided to have some Paprika first. It was great. I thought that it rode the 'in too deep' line very well while keeping the general tone fairly light. The disturbing bits were never utterly horrifying, the soundtrack was wonderful (I am listening to it RITE NOW), the animation was beautiful (and the palettes!). There probably could have been somewhat more cohesion between the individuals' experiences and the larger crisis, and there were definitely logical pieces that never came into being, but... I didn't even really mind.
Satoshi Kon directed Perfect Blue and was an animator on Roujin Z, which completely makes sense.

Hot Fuzz was even better, really. I respect so highly people who can make such a satire with so much love. No cynicism, no 'this isn't enough without a five-minute self-aware monologue', just so much effort and attention lavished on small things. The sequence where Simon Pegg makes his journey to the countryside is so small, but so prettily edited. The movie's also pretty hilarious, nearly constantly. Just so lush and dense and adorably cared-for. I will buy me some DVDs right quick when they come out.

The only place it's playing here is at the Kendall; I don't know where it may or may not be down RI.
It's just this little chromium switch, here...derspatchel on June 12th, 2007 01:13 am (UTC)

And using the cellphone reception bars as shorthand for distance travelled was a brilliant device. I bet it's been used before and all, but this was the first time I've seen it used, so right now, at least, I think it was a brilliant device.

Glad you liked Hot Fuzz. The town center shots were filmed at a town near where I live (Wells). My best friend got married there about a year ago.

Heart Satoshi Kon. Have you seen the series Paranoia Agent?

I haven't, but I've heard good things about it. Will look it up.

god damn i need to see paprika. I am glad the soundtrack is good; hirasawa's stuff makes my brain explode (I cannot even THINK about the opening sequence to Paranoia Agent without WEEPING)
